Wild-Wings Press Release

NEW YORK – April 2, 2009 – The Minnesota Wild, chasing a playoff berth in the jam-packed Western Conference, travel to “Hockeytown” to face the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL “Game of the Week,” Sunday, 12:30 p.m. ET on NBC, presented in high definition. Hockey Hall of Famer Mike “Doc” Emrick (play-by-play), Eddie Olczyk (analyst) and Pierre McGuire (inside-the-glass reporter) call the action. McGuire will pull double duty, hosting NBC’s studio show alongside analyst Mike Milbury on site at the Joe Louis Arena. Emrick today received a Sports Emmy nomination for Outstanding Sports Personality – Play-by-Play.

Minnesota stands in 10th place in the Western Conference but just three points out of the seventh position. The Red Wings are second in the conference, trailing San Jose by four points.

MCGUIRE ON THE MATCHUP: “The Wild, we know, are fighting for their playoff lives, but Detroit’s going to want to send Minnesota a message in case they face each other in the first round.”

MCGUIRE ON MIKKO KOIVU: “He’s so underappreciated and is arguably the best two-way player in the game.”

MCGUIRE ON RED WINGS: “They are still the gold standard in terms of their team play and their skill level. The big question for them, as it’s been all year, is what’s going on with their goaltending.”

MCGUIRE ON THE WILD: “Injuries put them in a hole but I really like their team. Niklas Backstrom is a guy nobody knows about but is really, really good. They’re never out-coached and they’re such a better team with Marian Gaborik in the lineup.

DETROIT AT CHICAGO SET FOR “GAME OF THE WEEK” ON FINAL DAY OF REGULAR SEASON: On the final day of the regular season, Sunday, April 12, the “Game of the Week” moves to the Windy City as the Chicago Blackhawks host the Red Wings – a 2 p.m. faceoff.
