Games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup Final Have Target Dates Set

The Stanley Cup Final is always in a bit of a flux, due to the flexible nature of things like series length, the NBA Finals, and the television networks launching new summer programs.

This year will have at least one of those factors out of the way, as the NBA Finals aren’t begin until June 12th, allowing the NHL to pretty much schedule most of their championship series how they see fit. According to NBC’s PR dep’t, Games 1 and 2 of the 2012 Stanley Cup Final are planned for Wednesday, May 30th and Saturday, June 2nd at 8 p.m. ET. These are merely target dates, but one would have to think unless we see sweeps both ways, this is how things will go. The current target date for the conference finals to end is either May 27th or May 28th based on the current schedule.

One would imagine this means NBC and NBC Sports Network (taking Games 3 & 4) will be going on a Monday/Wednesday/Saturday rotation with the Final, as is tradition, with the NBA usually going on a Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday plan. It’s kind of a shame, however, the NBC didn’t use the NBA’s late start as a chance to see if getting the Stanley Cup Final off of little-watched Saturday nights wouldn’t help ratings. I’d love to see them try a Thursday/Sunday (5/31 and 6/3) start, then follow up with Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (6/5, 6/7, 6/9) before moving to Monday and Wednesday for the final two games (6/11, 6/13) before the NBA Finals start.

Then again, the dates are obviously not set in stone and there’s still time to change them. For now, however, there will likely be hockey on May 30th and June 2nd. Set your calendars.

so if I’m reading between the lines, the East Finals will probably be Monday, Wednesday, Saturday afternoon, Monday, Wednesday, Saturday afternoon, and Monday (Memorial Day for Game 7), and the West Finals would be Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday afternoon, Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday afternoon (Memorial Day Sunday for Game 7).

  2. NBC doesn’t have games on May 26/27. Staples Center conflicts could change this, but more likely something like this.

    East – Monday 5/14, Wednesday 5/16, Saturday 5/19 (afternoon), Monday 5/21, Wednesday 5/23, Friday 5/25, Sunday 5/27.

    West – Sunday 5/13, Tuesday 5/15, Thursday 5/17, Sunday 5/20 (afternoon), Tuesday 5/22, Thursday 5/24, Saturday 5/26.

My guess is the Stanley Cup Final will begin on May 30 if either series goes 7. NBC has to fit it around America’s Got Talent (Mondays and Tuesdays). Thursday June 7 is also likely unavailable. My guess is they’d like to do it like this:

Wednesday 5/30, Saturday 6/2, Monday 6/4 (NBC SN), Wednesday 6/6 (NBC SN), Friday 6/8, Sunday 6/10, Wednesday 6/13

As for Saturday night games. Those are a bit of a tradition here in Canada for millions. If a few Americans can’t be bothered to watch, then I don’t see the big deal (well unless you’re NBC).

What r u talking about? NBC nhl has always had the finals on primetime ever since they have the rights. The entire Edm car series, ducks sens, pens wings, pens wings, chi phi, and Boston van hav all been on primetime.

    • Arthur says:

Staples has WNBA booked for 5:30 on 5/20. That would mean they move to a later slot around 8:00 if Game 4 is an NBC game starting at 12:00 local.
It’s all about building availability in this round.

      • This is correct. I took a quick look at the schedules for the various buildings the other day, and it seems Staples Center is the only one with too many conflicts. And even that depends on if the Lakers and Clippers win their game 7s this weekend.

Steve, the cup finals used to be on Tues. Thurs. and Sat. During that time, the NBA finals were on Wed. Fri. and Sun. Mondays were sparingly used by either sport.
