Caps/Rangers Game 5 Down From Game 3

Game 5 of the Capitals/Rangers series had fewer overtimes and fewer viewers than Game 3.

Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal between Washington and New York drew 1.65 million viewers, down 200,000 viewers from Game 3, the last game on NBC Sports Network (1.85 million). Regardless, it was still the second-most watched game of the series, and third-most watched game of the post-season on cable.

Locally, the game drew a 4.32 rating in New York, setting a record for the NHL on NBC Sports Network in the market.

Through three telecasts, NBC Sports Network has averaged 1.67 million viewers for the Capitals/Rangers series, it’s most-watched series in the second round.

Flyers/Devils Remains Big, Sets Record in New York

Game 4 between Philadelphia and New Jersey couldn’t quite match the numbers for an overtime Game 3, but the series remained potent with viewers.

The game drew 1.63 million viewers on NBC Sports Network. While that’s down just a little from Game 3 (1.66 million) that still marks the second-highest numbers of the series, and third-highest numbers for the Stanley Cup Playoffs on cable.

In New York, the game drew a 2.37 rating, a record for the Devils in the market. The series has averaged 1.77 million viewers through four games on NBC and NBC Sports Network, and 1.52 million for three games on NBC Sports Network.

FRIDAY: Phoenix/Nashville Continues to Struggle

Game 5 numbers from Predators/Coyotes should be available, but Game 4 numbers from the weekend show this as a series still struggling to gain traction since it shifted from Phoenix to Nashville.

Game 4 between Phoenix and Nashville drew 660,000 viewers on NBC Sports Network. While that’s up huge from Game 3, which drew one of the lowest numbers of the playoffs during the Triple-OT Rangers/Caps game, it failed to match the numbers from Games 1 & 2 despite facing no other NHL competition.

The series should gain a few more viewers from an OT lead-in from the Rangers and Capitals on Monday night.
