CBC’S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA will be the Canadian broadcaster for the Bridgestone 2013 NHL Winter Classic featuring the Toronto Maple Leafs vs. the Detroit Red Wings at Michigan University Stadium in Ann Arbor on Jan. 1, 2013, the CBC confirmed today.
“The Winter Classic is always popular with hockey fans, but this one’s going to be something else,” said Julie Bristow, CBC’s executive director of studio and unscripted programming (including sports). “With the Toronto Maple Leafs making the first appearance by a Canadian team—and taking on another Original Six franchise in the Detroit Red Wings—we’re confident Canadians will tune in like never before.”
“We’re just thrilled to bring Canadians what is sure to be the most anticipated NHL Winter Classic yet,” said Jeffrey Orridge, CBC’s executive director of sport properties. “The broadcast of this game speaks to Hockey Night in Canada’s commitment—in partnership with the NHL—to really increase the excitement around hockey and reach new fans.”
Full details of CBC’S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA coverage of the 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and related events will be announced later.
The live audience is expected to be a record-setter as well. Michigan Stadium, home to the University of Michigan Wolverines football team, is North America’s largest sports stadium, with a seating capacity of almost 110,000.
The Detroit-Toronto rivalry is as competitive as it is historic. In all-time regular season play, the Red Wings have scored 646 wins against Toronto—just one win more than the 645 notched by the Leafs on Detroit.
