NHL Original Productions Will Debut with NHL 36: Patrick Kane

VERSUS will be the home for the maiden voyage of the newly formed NHL Original Productions beginning this week with a new, 10-part series following NHL stars.

The network announced last week that they would be debuting a new series called NHL 36 this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ET (before the Blackhawks take on the Wild on VERSUS). Now, more details of the series have surfaced. In what will be the first of a 10-episode series, cameras will provide a “behind-the-scenes look into the life” of an NHL superstar, the first being Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane. Isolated cameras and microphones will follow Kane around during games, while interviews with the man himself, as well as family members and Chicago general manager Stan Bowman (who was once Kane’s landlord) will provide further insight into Kane’s lifestyle, both on and off the ice.

From the NHL, here are some thoughts from the bigwigs behind the series:

“We are excited about the opportunity to create individual player portraits with unprecedented depth — at home with family, out with friends and in the workplace,” said Ross Greenburg, executive producer, NHL 36. “Wherever they go, whatever they do, our cameras are there, capturing what a day in the life is like for some of the biggest names in the NHL.”

“NHL 36 is a great new series that is part of the high-quality storytelling and production values of NBC Sports,” said Sam Flood, Executive Producer for NBC Sports and VERSUS. “It’s an example of programming that dives deeper into the sport and its players, and one that viewers can expect to see more of from the new NBC Sports Network.”

“This series provides an opportunity to showcase our players in a new and compelling way, revealing their personalities and parts of their daily routine not usually seen by fans,” said John Collins, NHL chief operating officer. “There are no better storytellers than Ross Greenburg and the team at NBC Sports, so we know NHL 36 will appeal to a broad audience. The Patrick Kane episode is a great way to launch our new venture, NHL Original Productions.”

The series will be narrated by actor Peter Coyote, and music will come from composer Ferdinand J. Smith. As it is an NHL Original Production, the show will re-air multiple times on VERSUS and the NHL Network in the coming weeks. The league noted that “the next player to be featured and the air date will be announced at a later date.” The league developed NHL Original Productions in collaboration with Greenburg, who produced the documentary Broad Street Bullies, as well as last year’s Emmy-award winning 24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the Winter Classic. Coincidentally, 24/7 Rangers/Flyers: Road to the Winter Classic will premiere the same night on HBO.
