NEW YORK (Sept. 23, 2011) – As Mike Modano, the highest-scoring U.S.-born player in NHL history, announces his retirement from the National Hockey League today, NHL Network and NHL.com will provide comprehensive coverage of the event and celebrate his stellar, 21-season career.

Coverage begins today with a live broadcast of Modano’s retirement press conference at 2 p.m. ET on NHL Network that also will be streamed live on NHL.com and Dallasstars.com.

Tomorrow, September 24, at 6 p.m. ET, NHL Network will air a special tribute to the life and career of the NHL’s most prolific American-born player titled “Mike Modano: American Icon.” It depicts Modano’s emergence as the face of a franchise and chronicles his evolution as a player — from childhood through becoming the first overall draft pick in 1988 by Minnesota to the Stars’ relocation in 1993 through his final game in a Dallas Stars uniform in 2010. Family, friends and former teammates share their thoughts about Modano, his contribution to the game and how he’ll be remembered.
