REPORT: 2012 Winter Classic to be Scheduled for Primetime

Looks as if we see the NHL schedule tomorrow. From Steve Zipay of Newsday:

The Rangers will face the Flyers in the NHL Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Monday, Jan. 2, at 8 p.m., sources with knowledge of the planning confirmed Tuesday. The long-running rumors of the pairing for the outdoor game will be confirmed officially with the release of the NHL schedule this week.

It has to be at night. It’s too warm in Philly during the day alot of the time.

  2. e says:

I believe there are only 8 teams that NBC will allow to participate in the Winter classic:
    1. Rangers 5. Red Wings
    2. Flyers 6. Black Hawks
    3. Penguins 7. Bruins
    4. Capitals 8. Sabres (only if they are contending, because of the enormous ratings they get in Buffalo).

NBC will not allow any other team to compete in this New Years Day event. I hope the NHL realizes this and agrees to another outdoor game each season so that other teams can benefit from this.

    • Ryan says:

All of those eight teams made the playoffs this year. You can pine for Islanders/Blue Jackets or Devils/Wild if you want, but I’m not going to fault NBC for putting exciting and winning teams on TV.

  3. Mike in Idaho says:

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Capitals falling from the “beloved by NBC” list this season.

    • Jason says:

Only if the team falls totally from grace and if Ovechkin has in fact peaked and will never recover. If he recovers, I’d beg to differ.

  4. kevin says:

Why are you people so anxious to see Minn or Columbus in the WC??? First of all, you have to be GOOD to be involved……that eliminates at least half the league. You don’t see the NBA showing the Timberwolves or Hornets on Xmas day do you?????/

  5. Jack says:

Kevin is right. Aside from the NFL, most networks rely on a few select big market teams to drive ratings. How often does ABC showcase the Lakers, Celtics, Bulls. Heat, Suns or Spurs during the regular season? FOX always pushes the Red Sox, Yankees, Phillies, Dodgers, and Mets. Casual viewers are more drawn to big market matchups..they’re not going to watch Sharks vs Predators.

Rangers vs Flyers on a Monday night will probably be the highest rated Winter Classic so far. There’s no NFL or NCAA Bowl games scheduled for the 2nd.

    • Wade says:

Jack, there are plenty of Bowl games scheduled for the 2nd, but none in primetime. The Rose Bowl is a 5:00 ET start, so the Winter Classic should be the only major sporting event on during that time. Last year, the Winter Classic went against the Fiesta Bowl. I’ll be interested to see how it does in ratings in 2012. Should be pretty good.
