Flyers-Sabres OT Thriller Draws Best First Round Numbers Since 2009

The NHL On NBC broadcast of Sunday’s overtime Game 6 between Philadelphia and Buffalo drew a 1.6 overnight rating, according to Austin Karp of SportsBusiness Daily. This rating is the best for a first round Stanley Cup Playoff game since April 19, 2009, when Penguins vs. Flyers, Game 3 drew a 1.7. The rating is up 19% from the comparable telecast last year (PHX vs. DET, Game 6, 4/25/10: 1.3). The number is also up 38% from the comparable telecast two years ago (WSH vs. NYR, Game 6, 4/26/09: 1.0). It is indoor hockey’s best numbers on television, period, since last year’s Stanley Cup Final.

Meanwhile on Saturday, while we were in Washington, the deciding Game 5 of Rangers/Capitals drew a 1.3 overnight. These numbers are even with the comparable year-ago telecast (NSH vs. CHI, Game 5, 4/24/10: 1.3) and up 8% from the similar telecast two years ago (PIT vs. PHI, Game 6, 4/25/09: 1.2). We’ll be waiting out local numbers for the rest of the day, but overall a lot to be happy with on the NBC side of things this weekend.

One Response to Flyers-Sabres OT Thriller Draws Best First Round Numbers Since 2009

  1. Kevin says:

I am guessing that the hardcore fans are tuning in. Also, I think this shows why NBC needs to be put on new and different match-ups on. I think fans will show up for match-ups they haven’t seen. I think the fans are getting sick of seeing the same match-ups on NBC. This is evidenced by the awful numbers NBC has pulled in this season. I get sick of seeing Pens/Wings, Wings/Hawks, Pens/Caps, Pens/Flyers, and Rangers/Flyers.
