Rangers/Flyers (For the Third Time This Season) to be Game of the Week April 3rd

Just confirmed by the Commissioner on his weekly radio show. Oh well.

NEW YORK (March 17, 2011) –The Sunday, April 3, New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers game has been flexed as NBC Sports’ “NHL Game of the Week” and will be played at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia at 12:30 p.m. ET, the National Hockey League and NBC Sports announced today.

As these clubs meet for the final time this season — both in hot pursuit of playoff spots — it will evoke memories of the final game of the 2009-10 regular season, in which the Flyers clinched their place in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a win over the Rangers in a shootout, simultaneously ending the Blueshirts’ season. In their five previous meetings this season, the Flyers have come out on top four times to the Rangers’ one.

The Rangers currently rank third in the Atlantic Division standings and seventh in the Eastern Conference with a record of 37-30-4 (78 pts). The Flyers lead both the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference with a record of 43-19-7 (93 pts).

At least 13 days prior to the scheduled game, one game is selected for broadcast on NBC. All NBC games will be broadcast on Sundays and all games will be presented in HD. Games not flexed to NBC will be available to the teams’ regional carriers and remain at the originally announced start time. The April 3 match-up was first announced on the Thursday, March 17, edition of “NHL Hour With Commissioner Gary Bettman” on NHL.com and SIRIUS XM Radio airing from 6-7 p.m. ET. All subsequent flexed games will be announced on NHL Hour with Commissioner Gary Bettman.

The first RANGERS-Flyers game was regional on Hockey Day Across America.

This will backfire in NBC’s face big time. It’s Opening Weekend for baseball in two baseball-mad towns and who is going to want to watch a hockey game that may be of limited consequence by that time? There are two other things that make this a bad move.

1: Whenever another sporting event of interest goes against the Flyers on NBC, it’s the Flyers who don’t get the ratings (and since this is Sunday, the Phillies game is on broadcast TV). The 2010 Winter Classic being beaten in Philly by Penn State being in a bowl game on ESPN (and the Mummers Parade!) said a lot about true loyalty.

2: The Rangers aren’t a good ratings draw because New York is a balkanized hockey market. The Rangers are a ratings disease for NBC since half of the market that cares about hockey in New York won’t watch the game. It was the Rangers bad ratings in the ’09 playoffs that gave the Flyers said third-place-in-Philly Winter Classic over the Capitals.

As much as I want the games on NBC to succeed, I hope this falls flat on their faces and teaches them a lesson. They’d have gotten the same national numbers with Blackhawks/Lightning and they’d probably get the same if not better local numbers. For shame, NBC and NHL.
