Gord Miller Joins VERSUS (At Least For One Game)

The interesting names flying around as part of the NBC/VERSUS merger continue, it appears.

Tuesday night, TSN’s lead broadcast team, Gord Miller and Pierre McGuire, will be calling the VERSUS broadcast of the Buffalo Sabres/Montreal Canadiens game on Tuesday at 7:30 PM ET. The game is not scheduled to air on TSN and, while it will air on TSN2, the feed will be an original production of VERSUS with TSN2 doing the simulcasting. This is no signal of Miller joining VERSUS on a permanent basis, and with all of this news, we’ll have to go game by game.

This will be the first time Miller has worked an original production for VERSUS, as he has been featured many times when the network has done simulcasts of TSN games, including last Wednesday’s ridiculous game in Boston. He has been the lead play-by-play man for TSN since 2002. This will be McGuire’s second game for VERSUS since rejoining the network, as he was a studio commentator for OLN in 2005-2006. He has been the lead analyst for TSN since 2002, and the lead inside the glass reporter for NBC since 2006.

Meanwhile, Dave Strader, Billy Jaffe and Brian Engblom will be calling Washington-Phoenix on Monday.

Very interesting, considering the TSN/ESPN connection. Actually, TSN2 isn’t airing that game. They only usually broadcast Versus games with only American teams involved. It has to do with local rights.

The English language broadcast is on TSN Habs which I believe is local to the Habs broadcast area.

These are certainly interesting days for Versus. Their best move so far was dropping Joe Benihaha…. EXLUSIVELY NOT on Versus. 🙂

    • Josh. says:

It’s going to air on TSN as part of the regional Habs package they picked up earlier this season.

I’m actually not sure who they have had working these games, but I’m pretty sure it hasn’t been their national Miller/Cuthbert crews. Only people from about Kingston east to the Atlantic get to see them.

This is an interesting move. If Versus is going to start picking off Canadian talent, I would hope they would make use of Cris Cuthburt.

This is a interesting move to put Gord Miller aka Gus Johnson of Canada on games if VS is going to use TSN Talent I hope Cuthbert and Ferraro along with Hughson and Simpson get used.

    • Ryan says:

Hughson and Simpson are on CBC, not TSN. TSN commitments keep these guys too busy to do more than occasional work for Versus, and I have to think they’d rather stay in Canada with the higher profile.

Also I don’t understand your Gus Johnson comparison, I find Miller to be a very good play-by-play guy but not somebody who shows any personality or charisma at all.

Hughson won’t be going anywhere. He gave up the local Vancouver games to work just with CBC saying he didn’t want the travel. I don’t obviously know the terms of his contract but it wouldn’t surprise me if he had an exclusive deal with the CBC…

Exciting to see this move, and I always think Pierre is better when not trying to compete with another analyst. Even if it’s just occasional, getting A-list talent on Versus is a great thing, no matter how it’s done.

On a side note, I have to say I’m pleased with the trio Versus has calling the game on Monday night. Strader makes sense (calls Coyotes games), but seeing Jaffe in the booth is exciting. I like to think that this shows that NBC thinks fairly highly of his work–as they should.

  5. Larry says:

Please no more doc and edzo! Strader and Miller is great by me.

  6. Jason says:

I saw a clip of Darren Dregier on VS NHL OT and he is the TSN insider so I think this partnership is going to be a long term deal so to speak in which TSN talent are allowed on VS.
