Take This For What It’s Worth, But We Usually Trust Chris Botta: NHL and NBC to Re-Up For Two Years?

This comes from his Twitter feed:

NHL and NBC finalizing new two-year agreement.

There was no further info backing it up, and it is on a Twitter post, but we tend to trust what Chris Botta usually says.  However, the league and NBC have never agreed to two-years since the initial agreement in 2004, so we shall see.  The NHL is currently in it’s fourth season on NBC.

Botta has a little more on NYI Point Blank:

A broadcast industry source told me the NHL and NBC are finalizing a new two-year deal and could have an announcement soon.

Not really much more, but you know where he’s coming from here.

It makes sense to sign for 2 years. NBC can use its deal to promote the 2010 Olympics, while the NHL can have both NBC and Versus signed through 2011. Then, the league, if the ratings continue to increase, would be able to put up all the rights for sale to the highest bidder.

I’m sure NBC sees that they can actually win the Sat/Sun nite ratings battle with the NHL which is something they can’t seem to do on their own

Considering the Sunday night hockey game was the first time NBC had won the ratings battle for the 18-49 people since the Super Bowl…they would be wise to lock up the Stanley Cup finals ASAP.

I’m a little torn on this. I don’t actually mind NBC’s coverage of the games, and I think the broadcast network exposure is good. Yet I hate the way the league has bent over for NBC in terms of scheduling this year, and, in a local note, I hate that the NBC affiliate in Cleveland runs Cleveland Indians games instead of playoff games in April and May with no alternate-viewing option.

And I’m figuring NBC is praying for two more years of Red Wings-Penguins finals! Is there any single other matchup that would be so good for them?

Any of these teams in the Final would be good…Detroit, Chicago, Boston, Pitt, NYR, Philly, Dallas, Colorado, Minn, Wash, even LA…actually just one of these teams would be good. But Ottawa vs Calgary…..that won’t work
