Pens/Caps Game 1 Ratings Up 40% from Last Year

According to NBC Sports spokesman Brian Walker, NBC’s telecast of Pittsburgh/Washington’s Game 1 Eastern Conference Semi-final drew a 1.4/4 overnight rating on NBC.  These numbers are up 40% from last year’s comparable telecast (a 1.0/4 for Game 2 of Colorado/Detroit).  Obviously, the hype behind the series combined with those getting ready for the Kentucky Derby (The highest-rated race in 17 years) helped out.

We will know the Anaheim/Detroit ratings tomorrow.  But I would not be shocked if Ducks/Red Wings did an even better rating.

The First Local Broadcasting News of the Summer: Jackets to Drop Danny Gare

But they will keep the rest of their crew.  From the Blue Jackets themselves:

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets announced today a restructuring of the National Hockey League club’s broadcast teams.  Jeff Rimer, Bill Davidge and George Matthews will each return to the broadcast booth in 2009-10, while television analyst Danny Gare will not.

Rimer has spent the past two decades calling play-by-play action in the NHL, including the past four seasons with Columbus.  He will once again handle those duties on FOX Sports Ohio telecasts, where he will be joined by Davidge as color analyst.  Davidge has served in that capacity on the Blue Jackets Radio Network since 2000, while also contributing to the “Blue Jackets Live” pre- and post-game shows on FOX Sports Ohio since 2007.

Matthews will return for his ninth season on the Blue Jackets Radio Network and flagship stations, WBNS-AM, Sports Radio 1460 The Fan, and WWCD-FM, CD101.  The club will begin an immediate search for an additional member of the radio broadcast team to partner with Matthews.

“We are very pleased that Jeff, Bill and George will be returning to call Blue Jackets games next season and are excited about teaming Jeff and Bill together on our FOX Sports Ohio telecasts,” said Blue Jackets Vice President of Marketing Marc Gregory.  “We are very appreciative of all that Danny has done for our organization, both in and out of the broadcast booth, the past three years.  We wish him nothing but the best.”

Let’s Talk About Our Weekend

Before we start this, some legit news to report: Thanks to our readers who caught that NHL Network is televising Game 5 of the Red Wings/Ducks series at 5:00 PM ET on Sunday.

Folks, we are no music journalists, but we feel like talking about our weekend spend with about 70,000 others at the Bamboozle Festival in the Giants Stadium parking lot.  Comic Zack Galifianakis put it, maybe naively, best “Is it in a parking lot?  [referring to where he specifically performed] is it in a tent?  Are there a ton of Blink-182 cover bands playing?”

Yes, pop-punk dominated the two days, but with comics like Galifianakis, hardcore punk like Rise Against, the ska-pop reunited No Doubt and, uh… GWAR, The Bamboozle maintains it’s standing as one of the nation’s most underrated festivals, and one that – based on it’s ever-increasing, star-power tinged headliners – is gaining steam.

Our random thoughts from the two days, after the jump:
