BREAKING: NHL Network to Televise First Playoff Game in the U.S.

Thanks to Schuyler Baehman of the NHL’s Communications Dep’t and all-around good guy (and who’s Twitter feed you should check out) for sending this along to us, as we’ve been hoping for this for quite some time:

In the first time of NHL Network U.S.’s history, it will broadcast a Stanley Cup Playoff game by airing live Game 2 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Conference Quarter-Final match-up between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Detroit Red Wings from Detroit on Saturday, April 18 @ 6pm ET.

Locally, Fox Sports Detroit and Fox Sports Ohio will broadcast this game live as previously scheduled.  NHL Network will be blacked out in those local markets.

So there you go.  Mr. Baehman told us that there are “no decisions yet on if other games will be on NHL Network”.  This is a great decision, as we’ll be able to flip back and forth and tune into some bonus playoff hockey.

This is an excellent move. Good on the NHL for getting something right for a change.

Excellent news. Useless to me since I’m in Michigan, but I look forward to them showing more. Also, don’t forget that they show replays of some playoff games at 2PM in the afternoon the following day, so some games that don’t get nationwide coverage may be shown that way (like tonight’s Rangers/Caps game, and tomorrow’s Canadiens/Bruins game).

    NYR-WAS game 1 – Thu 2pm
    CGY-CHI game 1 – Fri 2pm
    CAR-NJ game 2 – Sat 11am
    NYR-WAS game 2 – Sun 11am
according to my on screen guide.

Why am I the only one who thinks this is a terrible move? As an out-of-market Wings fan, I now have to buy TWO NHL packages to watch every playoff game.

    That’s absurd.

Today NHLN was showing last night’s Was-NYR game at 2PM, but it was blacked out in my area (NYC). The local network was also re-showing the game from 12:30-3:00. I don’t know if the black out was there because it was being shown simultaneously on the other channel, or it would have been blacked out anyway. In any case, its damn lame. Its not even a live game.

But what great news about showing live playoff games. I am so stoked for that and hope there is plenty more. The US networks cherry pick what games to show instead of following a series like CBC and TSN do, so its hard to follow a whole series here. VS does ok, but its got only one channel. Tonight is nice because they will air 3 games, but there will be some overlapping times.

Does anyone know if NHLN will have its own broadcast Saturday, or will it be a TSN/CBC feed?

TSN2 is showing FS Detroit HD’s feed? did they do that with last night’s Devils game? NHL Network showed the highlights from MSG+.
