TSN Shows Improved Ratings, Little Comment On How They’re Screwing Over Viewers with Playoff Games on TSN2


Toronto, ON (April 14, 2009) – TSN delivered big audiences for the NHL in the first year of the network’s multi-year broadcast extension with the league.  With 71 games in the 2008-09 season featuring Canadian teams, TSN averaged 479,000 viewers – up 17% compared to last season.

In addition to impressive overall audience growth, the NHL on TSN  also saw television ratings grow in the key advertising demographics compared to last season: Adults 18-34 increased by 20%, Adults 25-54 increased by 15% and Adults 18-49 increased by 15%.

During the 2008-09 season, TSN gave sports fans even more choice when it came to watching live NHL action.  TSN added 11 bonus games to its schedule, featuring non-Canadian teams, and TSN2 delivered exclusive live coverage of 33 NHL games.  

“Giving Canadian hockey fans more coverage of their teams has always been a top priority for TSN,” said Phil King, President of TSN. “We are thrilled that our new package of NHL games has proven to be a winner and we look forward to delivering even more NHL coverage throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs.”

Throughout the regular season, TSN delivered in-depth NHL coverage on multiple programs including SPORTSCENTRE, MOLSON THAT’S HOCKEY, OFF THE RECORD WITH MICHAEL LANDSBERG and TSN THE REPORTERS WITH DAVE HODGE. Online, TSN.ca once again proved to be the ultimate hockey destination for NHL fans with extensive, up-to-the minute hockey news, NHL games on-demand, blogs, stats and scores along with special insights from TSN’s panel of hockey experts. TSN also delivered NHL news to fans on the go with TSN MOBILE and TSN Text Alerts.  

This season also marked the debut of Delores Claman’s classic ‘The Hockey Theme’ on TSN.  CTV Inc. restored and recorded a classic rendition featuring 54 members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The iconic song was used on TSN during all broadcasts of NHL games featuring Canadian teams.  

When it mattered the most, hockey fans once again turned to TSN and its team of experts for up-to-the-minute hockey news. TSN’s annual NHL Trade Deadline special TRADECENTRE 09 attracted more viewers than all other Canadian sports networks combined.  On trade deadline day, TSN also drew a record amount of traffic online at TSN.ca and on TSN MOBILE.

TSN’s NHL coverage continues throughout the first three rounds of the 2009 STANLEY CUP® PLAYOFFS highlighted by exclusive coverage of the Chicago/Calgary series. This marks the first time TSN has coverage of a Canadian team during the STANLEY CUP® PLAYOFFS. In addition to the Calgary/Chicago series, TSN and TSN2 will have coverage of the Washington/New York, Detroit/Columbus, and New Jersey/Carolina series during the first round of the NHL post-season. TSN’s coverage of the STANLEY CUP® PLAYOFFS gets underway on Wednesday, April 15 at 7 p.m. ET, with Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals at home to the Rangers. Exclusive coverage of the Chicago/Calgary series on TSN begins on Thursday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. ET.  TSN’s full broadcast schedule is available at TSN.ca.
