CBC to Air Hockey Day in Canada in Three Other Languages, None of Which We Flunked in High School


CBC continues to help grow the game of hockey across the country, with the ninth annualTIM HORTONS HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 12 noon ET. Ron MacLean will front the broadcast from the Memorial Civic Centre in Campbellton, New Brunswick – the host location for the unofficial Canadian hockey holiday. The 2009 edition of TIM HORTONS HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA will also continue its multicultural tradition, providing select NHL games in Cantonese, Italian and Punjabi languages.

TIM HORTONS HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA begins the 13.5-hour long broadcast on Feb. 21st with Celebrating the Game, as MacLean leads viewers through features and stories that paint the picture of Canada’s great frozen game, with a special focus on “Rivalries”, the theme of this year’s broadcast.  CBC will also visit satellite locations in Plaster Rock, N.B, Windsor, Ont., Carlyle, Sask., Cold Lake, Alta. and Toronto, Ont.

Headlining the day is the NHL All-Canadian tripleheader, beginning at 3 p.m. ET, with the Canadiens facing off against the Ottawa Senators at the Bell Centre in Montreal.  This match-up will also be available in Cantonese, with Alex Chum of OMNI Television providing play-by-play at CBCSports.ca

Game Two of the tripleheader begins at 7 p.m. ET and features the highly anticipated return of former Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin to Toronto, as the Leafs host the Vancouver Canucks.  During the first intermission, the legendary Don Cherry joins MacLean in Campbellton for a special Hockey Day edition of Coach’s Corner.

Parminder Singh and Harnarayan Singh will be on-location for the first time at the Air Canada Centre to call the Toronto / Vancouver match-up in Punjabi, available atCBCSports.caThe Punjabi broadcast is also available free to Bell TV subscribers on channel 24; free to Rogers digital cable subscribers in Ontario and New Brunswick on channel 40; and free to most Shaw Digital Cable subscribers in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba (Shaw Cable customers will need to check the Interactive Program Guide for channel assignment). The Leafs / Canucks showdown will also be available in Italian on TLN, with Alf DeBlasis and Italian National Hockey Team coach Rick Cornacchia calling the game.

In the nightcap of the triple bill at 10 p.m. ET, Calgary heads to Edmonton to take on the Oilers in another edition of the Battle of Alberta.  This match-up will also be available in Punjabi at CBCSports.ca as well as on the Bell, Rogers and Shaw digital channels mentioned above.

The TIM HORTONS HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA celebrations kick off on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. ET with a special edition of CBC’S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADAfeaturing the Pittsburgh Penguins hosting the Montreal Canadiens.  Ron MacLean and Kelly Hrudey host the broadcast live from Plaster Rock, N.B., home of the 2009 World Pond Hockey Championship.
