NHL to Be Inspired by These Crazy “You Tubes” for Skills Competition

TSN’s Darren Dreger had a breaking story last night concerning the format of this year’s NHL All-Star Skills Competition, because that’s probably what a Sundin-chasing Canadian hockey insider does in the current Sundin lull.  Here are some of the details of that report:

  • The experiment with the Young-Stars Game continues: This year will simply be a Rookie-Sophomore showcase, similar to (but not as dull as) the NBA’s Rookie-Sophomore Challenge.  The two teams will play 3-on-3 for three, six minute, periods.  We suggested this a while back at a previous job site.  This is the right idea for the NHL, which has searched for the right way to do a Young-Stars showcase after the awful one in Dallas in 2007.
  • No more East vs. West.  No more disinterested athletes risking injury to entertain fans in the interest of a team competition.
  • There will be what Dreger calls a “super shootout”.  One will be an every-man-for-himself-style knockout competition.
  • The fancy-pants show-off shootout will return, and will definitely include at least Alexander Ovechkin.

The best quote I got out of all this from Dreger’s story:

So far, Washington’s Alex Ovechkin is the lone player recruited, however this “YouTube” inspired competition is expected to feature as many as six of the NHL’s most electrifying players, all of whom will be encouraged to focus and work on their most impressive shootout moves prior to the event.

Oh, YouTube, what will you inspire next?

Kidding aside, all of these changes are a right direction for an event that was definitely looking dead last season in Atlanta.  VERSUS will televise the All-Star Skills Competition on Saturday, January 25th at 7:00 PM.
