How the NHL Draft Would Get ESPN-ified

Look, there is so much value in the NHL Draft coverage TSN gives us.  Sure, Pierre McGuire yells at us in a way that says: “I AM YELLING BECAUSE WHAT I SAY IS IMPORTANT!  BUT I CAN’T STOP YELLING CAUSE THAT’LL MEAN THAT I LOST THE BATTLE!”.  But Gord, Pierre, Bob and Darren know what’s up.  Dreger broke the only trades of the night before Commissioner Bettman announced them.  It’s kind of a tension killer, but it’s no different from what Ric Bucher does on the NBA Draft on ESPN.

Which brings us to an interesting thought: Obviously, ESPN – were they to get back in the hockey game – would go full tilt on the NHL if they got back in.  I mean, c’mon, these guys televise the WNBA and MLS Drafts.  We’re pretty sure we saw the MLL Draft there once.  Do you folks even know what the MLL is?  Anyway, here’s what ESPN’s NHL Draft coverage would look like.

On-Site Host: John Buccigross
Analysts: Darren Pang, Barry Melrose and Jeremy Roenick

Studio Host: Steve Levy
Studio Analyst: Matthew Barnaby

Reporter: Erin Andrews

Look, no one at ESPN is looking to out-scoop TSN.  But I feel this combination of people would at least make for an interesting draft show.  What do you all think?

Its interesting but theres nobody on that panel who is a prospect insider which is what Bob McKenzie specializes in. Even Pierre McGuire calls junior hockey, none of those guys do. I’m not sure any of them would be very familiar with the players drafted.

Here’s something to remember, ESPN also used a TSN feed when they showed the draft. The fact is TSN is the best when it comes to hockey knowledge. Even ESPN knows that its Canadian cousin is the source when it comes to draft day.

  2. Bill says:

ESPN is never going to treat the NHL like it does the NBA–even though the TV numbers are much closer between the sports than we are lead to believe.

  3. Keith says:

I say keep all the TSN guys since it’s ESPN’s Canadian cousin, except we send Erin Andrews give interviews.

  4. Ariol- says:

Doesn’t look to me the NHL numbers are close to the NBA, Bill. They’re not even close. Actually, the NBA even beat the MLB last year in tv ratings, both during regular season and World Series..
