TSN2 to Pick Up Bulk of Free Agent Frenzy Coverage

We don’t envy the position of TSN scheduler.  You basically have to shove all of ESPN’s programming, in addition to exclusive Canadian content (NHL, CFL, curling, etc.) into a 24-hour day, plus some HBO boxing and SportsCentre’s and whatnot.

That’s why TSN2 has become a necessary Godsend.  It helps when covering stuff like UFA day.  TSN’s Wimbledon coverage will only allow 1-hour of Pierre McGuire yammering on at 5:00 PM ET.

However, TSN2 (and we hope, NHL Network) will air coverage from Noon-5PM ET.

Good work getting something on the air!

  1. Have you heard anything about NHL Network covering free agency day at all? I think they did a late-in-the-day thing for the trade deadline.

If memory serves NHL Network had a special NHL on the Fly program last year.

In other news…. I was sorry to discover that John Shannon and the NHL have parted ways…

I can’t help thinking this isn’t good news for the NHL Network and the future of hockey on TV in the States.

Nah, check this article from SBD: http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/article/131231

The league’s reorganizing in the wake of some lay-offs (and possible new hires as well), and it will include someone to oversee NHL Network U.S. In truth, I doubt much will change there regardless, unless the league and Comcast suddenly didn’t want TSN to do most of the programming.

What makes me nervous is that Shannon was a very safe pair of hands who knows hockey and broadcasting. Can we trust that the person taking over from Shannon has the same background and experience? Other than give them better sets (!) the NHL needs to leave the NHL Network alone. The move to put HNIC on last year was brilliant and I sure hope they do it again next season…

  4. Eric says:

NHL Network US will carry the 2nd-7th rounds, begiinning at 10am.

It’s currently slated to air 10am-2pm, with repeats 2-6pm and 6-10pm.
