switching style up.

After my whining and complaining about brackets, Lori sent me a bracket I can actually get behind;

I got your march madness right here, buddy....

I got your march madness right here, buddy....

SportSquee is doing a different kind of Madness that I can approve of. Click here and fill out your bracket and then hop, skip and jump on over to SportSquee and vote away. Dudes can easily participate. Especially if their criteria is “who is a bigger badass? Daniel Craig or Christian Bale?” Also note that DENNIS QUAID needs to be changed to CLIVE OWEN. This is crucial.

Who are my Final Four?

Depp vs Rudd

Craig vs Beckham

I hate March Madness.

No really. I can’t think of a more miserable time of year than March. It means that the hockey season is ending (except the Chiefs made the playoffs). The weather is in that strange and awkward in betweenness. And all I hear is BRACKETBRACKETBRACKETBRACKETBRACKET. It’s enough to make me want to rage. You see, I don’t like basketball. It’s too high scoring. It’s dull. And I hate the sound of shoes squeeking on the floor. My supreme disliking probably comes from the fact that as a resident of Spokane, I am supposed to be a rabid Gonzaga supporter. I am not. Gonzaga peeps don’t like it when you tell them their leading dude with a mustache pretty much looks like a child molester. If people cared about WHL/OHL/QMJHL playoffs as much as they cared about basketball, I’d be a less stabby individual. I have more important things to worry about than the Madness. Like, what color should I paint my nails. Finding a recipe for a good March pie. Doing my taxes. Pissing off PETA by consuming junior bacon cheeseburgers…You see, paying attention to basketball is sooooo not on that list. So if you ask me about my Final Four, odds are I will slap you. Not in the fun way either.

I won’t lie though, Obama filling out his bracket is totally cute and charming. And ZOMG! We’re both left handed!

NBC Touts Flyers-Penguins, Critical Acclaim

NEW YORK – March 18, 2009 – Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins host their intrastate rival the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL “Game of the Week,” Sunday, 12:30 p.m. ET on NBC, presented in high definition. Hockey Hall of Famer Mike “Doc” Emrick (play-by-play), Eddie Olczyk (analyst) and Pierre McGuire (inside-the-glass reporter) call the action. McGuire will pull double duty, hosting NBC’s studio show alongside analyst Mike Milbury on site at Mellon Arena.

The surging Penguins are 8-0-2 in their last 10 games to move into a tie with the Flyers for the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference with the Flyers holding three games in hand.

MCGUIRE ON THE RIVALRY: “It’s no secret the animosity between these two teams. They really dislike each other. This game has the potential to get real physical and nasty.”

MCGUIRE ON THE STREAKING PENGUINS: “The coaching change has brought some freshness to the dressing room which had become stagnant and maybe even polluted. The tone is now more instructional than through intimidation.

MCGUIRE ON PENGUINS TRADE DEADLINE MOVES: “The GM really made some bold moves in acquiring [Bill] Guerin and [Chris] Kunitz at the deadline. It really energized Sidney Crosby.”

MCGUIRE ON THE FLYERS: “This team can go far but a lot will depend on where Marty Biron’s head is at come playoff time. Also we know how good their special teams play is but they’re going to have to be able to score five-on-five as well.

MINNESOTA AT DETROIT & DETROIT AT CHICAGO FLEXED INTO “GAME OF THE WEEK”: The final two “Game of the Week” contests have been announced. Sunday, April 5 at 12:30 p.m. ET on NBC, the Minnesota Wild will face off against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Red Wings in Detroit. On the final day of the season, Sunday, April 12, the “Game of the Week” travels to the Windy City as the Chicago Blackhawks host the Red Wings – a 2 p.m. faceoff.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING ABOUT NBC’S COVERAGE:
ON EMRICK:
NY Daily News: “The top spot among hockey broadcasters.”

NY Post: “His dead-on descriptions, devoted application of history and superb sense of all moments are superior in the chronicles of any form of live broadcasting.”

ON MILBURY:
Boston Globe: “Never shy with an opinion…a quote machine.”

Philadelphia Inquirer: “Pierre McGuire’s verbal sparring with Milbury has been nothing short of classic theater.”

NY Daily News: “Mike Milbury has brought reality — and a sharp edge — to the Peacock’s NHL studio. He also has displayed something many analysts — in all sports — lack: guts.”

ON MCGUIRE:
Toronto Sun: “Excels as an ice-level analyst.”

Newsday: “A bundle of energy and a born schmoozer.”

ON THE INSIDE-THE-GLASS POSITION CREATED BY NBC PRODUCER SAM FLOOD:
Newsday: “Innovative…now widely copied.”

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers/Flyers draws 1.1/3

According to SporsBusinessDaily (reg. required), the NBC telecast of the Rangers/Flyers game drew a 1.1/3 overnight.  That’s even with last year’s comparable telecast (3/16/08, PHI vs. PIT) and tied for the 3rd lowest sports overnight rating that weekend, tied with the Conference USA Championship Game and NBA Countdown, and only ahead of ABC and CBS’ NCAA Hoops pre-game shows.

NHL Network to Air Devils/Blackhawks Tuesday

NHL Live on NHL Network/XM Sirius just announced that NHL Network will follow Marty as long as it takes to get the record, which means that NHL Network will be airing Tuesday’s Devils-Blackhawks game, with a blackout in the New Jersey/New York metro and Chicagoland areas.

Is Sean Avery the New NHL Golden Boy?

Hi, Ken from Fang’s Bites coming over to talk one of my favorite sports as Steve is away for a week. While he’s gone, you’ll be taken care of here at Puck The Media through various guest columns.

Yesterday, NBC showed the New York Rangers yet again on its NHL Game of the Week.  The network decided to showcase little fireant Sean Avery who after his infamous “sloppy seconds” comment about Calgary’s Dion Phaneuf and his girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert was suspended in December then dropped from the Dallas Stars. We all remember the story. After a brief rehabilitation tour in Hartford, Avery returned to the NHL and the New York Rangers.

Well, it appears all is good with Avery and the NHL once again. Garth Woolsey of the Toronto Star says NBC focused one of its cameras solely on Avery and visitors to the network’s website could see his every move for every shift on the ice.

Woolsey adds:

NBC, if it can, seems to want to treat the Rangers like its home team for featured games of the week. Its website offers video banks of Avery in action, as well as a slide show of no fewer than 55 photos of him on and off the ice. In a league that sometimes appears populated by interchangeably bland characters, Avery has personality. Much as it generally cultivates and trades off its fighting “tradition,” the NHL also specifically loves the attention he brings in the media capital of the world.

While I’m not a fan of his style of play, New York seems to love Avery and Avery seems to love New York. He’s a fashion plate, he’s a man about town and he gets his name in the papers. For the NHL, it’s like a don’t ask, don’t tell policy for Avery. He’s in New York, he gets attention, but as long as he doesn’t cause trouble, he’s a media magnet in the number one market in North America.

But how long will it be before he gets into trouble again and at what cost?

Thanks to Steve for allowing me to post today. Don’t forget to visit Fang’s Bites for the latest in sports media news including NBC, Versus, CBC and TSN in regards to the NHL.
